Shopping in Pathankot

Pathankot is the last big town before the road goes up into Himachal or across into J&K, so a lot of travellers stop here to pick up whatever they forgot. Both of the main malls are on Dalhousie Road, the same road you'll be on anyway if you're going to Mini Goa or the hills.

The malls

Novelty Mall (towards Mamun) and DLM City Centre Mall (near Gandhi Chowk) are where most people go. You'll find branded clothes and shoes, a food court, groceries and a cinema. Honestly, they're most useful on a very hot afternoon in May or June, or a rainy day in the monsoon when the lake isn't at its best.

Local bazaars

If you'd rather skip the malls, the older markets around the city centre and near the railway station are better for Punjabi juttis, phulkari dupattas, dry fruits and, from October onwards, shawls and woollens. Bargaining is normal at small shops. Branded stores have fixed prices.

Fitting it around a lake trip

  • Go to the lake in the morning and come back to the city for lunch and shopping when it's hottest.
  • Buy water, snacks and sunscreen in Pathankot. There isn't much to buy near the lake.
  • Going up to Dalhousie or Dharamshala after this? Warm clothes are usually cheaper here than in the hill towns.
  • Weekend evenings at the malls are packed. Weekday afternoons are much calmer.
