Where to stay when visiting Mini Goa

Most people do Mini Goa as a day trip from Pathankot, and that's fine. But if you can, stay one night. Early morning at the lake is a different place: the water is flat, the hills on the J&K side are still blue, and you'll have the shore almost to yourself until about 10.

You basically have two options. Stay near the lake around Dhar Kalan if you want it quiet, or stay in Pathankot city if you want more choice in hotels and food, or you have a train to catch.

Near the lake (Dhar Kalan side)

There aren't many places here, and the ones that exist are small. Think nature camps, a few family-run places and one or two resorts, not big hotels. Rooms are simple, the food is usually home-style Punjabi, and mobile signal drops in some spots. For most visitors that's the whole point.

With so few rooms, weekends and holidays fill up, especially between October and March. We'd suggest calling the place directly and asking what's included (meals, bonfire, parking) instead of trusting an old listing online.

In Pathankot city

Pathankot has plenty of budget and mid-range hotels near the railway station, along Dalhousie Road and around the main market. Stay in the city if you're arriving late by train, heading on to Dalhousie, Dharamshala or Jammu the next morning, or just want restaurants close by. From the city it's roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car to the lake, depending on traffic.

A few things we tell friends before they book

  • Check the location on Google Maps. Some places call themselves "Mini Goa" and are nowhere near the water.
  • Keep some cash. Smaller stays and dhabas around Dhar Kalan don't always take cards, and UPI depends on the signal.
  • Winter nights (Nov to Feb) get properly cold. Ask if the room has a heater or extra quilts.
  • Camping? Ask about toilets, drinking water and lights before you go, not after.
  • If it's just one night, try to reach by 3 or 4 pm so you don't miss the sunset.
