About Mini Goa

How a quiet stretch of reservoir in Pathankot got its name

Introduction

Mini Goa is the name people use for the stretch of lakeside at Dhar Kalan, on the Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoir, about 25 km from Pathankot city along Dhar Road. It's in the Shivalik foothills, right where Punjab meets J&K and Himachal. People come for the open water and the sunsets, a boat ride, and a few adventure activities, and most go home the same evening.

History & Background

The lake here is the reservoir formed by Ranjit Sagar Dam on the Ravi. For a long time only people from nearby villages came here, mostly for picnics on Sundays and festivals.

Over the last few years, local families and small operators started boating, food stalls, adventure rides and a few places to stay. Now on weekends you'll see cars from Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Jammu and even Delhi. Want to stay the night? Have a look at nearby stays.

Why “Mini Goa”?

There's no sea here, obviously. But stand on the shore in the evening, with wide water in front of you, the sky going orange, people out on boats and water activities going on, and you can see why someone first called it a mini Goa.

The name took off on Instagram and YouTube reels and has stuck since. It's still a much smaller and quieter place than the name suggests, which is part of why people like it. To get a feel for it, see the gallery and places around it.

About this website

minigoapathankot.com is run by a small local team from Dhar Kalan, Pathankot. We started it because people kept asking us the same things: how do we get to the lake, what is there to do, when should we come, where can we stay. Most of the answers online were scattered, old, or copied from each other, so we decided to write it all down properly in one place.

How we put the guides together

  • We go to Mini Goa and the places around it ourselves, and write from what we've seen wherever we can.
  • Distances and routes are checked on maps and with people who live here. Where a number is approximate, we say so.
  • Photos are either ours, sent by visitors with permission, or openly licensed images with the photographer credited.
  • Every Visitor Memory is checked by us before it's published.
  • When an activity, a road or a price changes, we update the page. If you spot something we missed, let us know.
