About this Place
One of the highest earth-fill dams in India, on the Ravi. Its reservoir is the lake at Mini Goa.
Ranjit Sagar Dam, also called Thein Dam, is on the Ravi near Shahpurkandi, where Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal meet. It's one of the highest earth-fill dams in India, finished in 2001, and it's used for both electricity and irrigation. The reservoir behind it is the same water you see at Mini Goa.
The dam is a protected installation, so you can't just walk around it. You'll mostly see it from the road and the viewpoints nearby, and photography of the structure itself may be stopped by security. What you can enjoy freely is the reservoir: long stretches of water between low green hills, which look their best in the evening and just after the monsoon. In winter you may also spot water birds along the edges. If you're visiting Mini Goa, this is right on the way, and Mukteshwar Mahadev is close by too.
