About this Place
A historic 16th-century fort with a famous Krishna temple and panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range.
Nurpur Fort is in the town of Nurpur, just across the border in Himachal, about 25 km from Pathankot. It was the seat of the Pathania Rajput rulers. The town was earlier called Dhameri and is said to have been renamed Nurpur after the Mughal empress Nur Jahan, who visited in the 17th century.
Much of the fort is in ruins now, but you can still walk through the old gateways and along parts of the walls, and from the top there's a good view of the Dhauladhar range, which has snow on it in winter. Inside the fort is the Brij Raj Swami temple, known for its Krishna and Meera idols and old wall paintings, and it's still an active temple. Give yourself an hour or so. Nurpur town is also known for its pashmina and wool weaving if you want to look around the market afterwards.
